Fantastic. In Deadly Crossing, R.E McDermott plays out the incredible adventure of Tom Dugan, a middle aged American man, that lives in London, that has a knack in getting is some pretty sticky situations. Imagine driving in a taxi with your girlfriend and getting a call from two former Russian Spetsnaz agents, that you haven't heard from in 10 years, asking for your help. That's what happened to Tom Dugan. Sergeant Borgandanov and Lieutenant Ilya called Tom since they are friends since Tom was in the CIA. The Russians are in trouble. Lieutenant Ilya's niece was taken by a Russian mob known as the Bratstvo, known for drugs and underground girl trafficking. They believe Katrina is in London and need Tom and his friend Alex Kaiours, former CIA, to help them find them. Every time Tom and the crew get closer to finding Katrina, the mob manages to not only escape, but take more of their families for their own means. Soon enough, this story not only becomes about finding a girl, but taking down the Bratstvo’s entire organization. They must risk the lives of each other in order to succeed this. This becomes a story of hardship and prevail in the most unlikely of happenings. As the story goes on, McDermott manages to bring points of view from the side of the Bratstvo and the protagonist such as Tom and the Russian mob. The way McDermott adds dramatic irony leaves the reader biting their nails at what's about to happen. Another thing I enjoyed were McDermott adding small events in the story that seem like nothing, but really, they are catastrophic. This made the story more exciting and added variety to the story. One thing I disliked about McDermott's writing was that he didn't develop the story in the beginning. I had to read to a certain point to understand who the characters were, where they were, and what was happening. Maybe it was just a part of th experience, but it made me a little bit confused. The overall theme of the story was one of prevail and perserverance. Throughout the story there were obstacles set in place for the characters and each time they prevailed only through perserverance. Overall, I gave this book a 4/5 rating on GoodReads. I really enjoyed the action and adventure format of this story. I would recommend this book to 16 and up. There is alot of swearing and drug reference. I would not recommend this book to non mature young adult. Maybe mature 14 year olds would be able to read it. Tom himself is fine, but anything that involves Bratsvo is a bit excplicit. This was a very good book. I would recommend this to any mature reader.Product details

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this novel. I had read Bob's first two books, enjoying both immensely. While the story is quite different from preceding books, I found Deadly Crossing a refreshing change. I highly recommend this latest offering. I highly suggest reading Bob,s other books first as the reader wii be introduced to the main characters.
A short prologue sets the scene in Prague before moving to London with our hero, Tom Duggan, Managing Director of Phoenix Shipping and his girlfriend Anna Walsh of MI5. Our ex-Spetznaz Borgdanov and Ilya Denosovitch soon interrupt a romantic dinner with Dugan and Walsh with the story of Ilya's niece going missing from home. Very quickly the action builds and moves to the Kairouz residence, home of Alex Kairouz and his wife Gillian. Alex is the owner Chairman of the Board of Phoenix Shipping.
Tension builds are McDermott takes us into the seamy side of the Russian mafia, the Bratstvo, and corruption between the authorities and the criminals and its involvement in international narcotics, people trafficking, and control through terror.
McDermott has explored his subject in great depth and has written a convincing if at times terrifying tale; it is not for the squeamish. It draws to logical conclusion but the reader should avoid jumping to conclusions. There are one or two loose ends that might have potential in a later novel.
I was a little worried about the possibly slow beginning but persevere if you enjoy a taut, well-written, thriller.
The subject matter was grisly and very painful to read about at times for me. However, the author portrayed it with truth and compassion....human trafficking. He and Anna and several young girls helped to bring it to a personal level and to give ways and means of combating it in Russia and the UK with the help of some American friends. It is a fast-paced and daring-do on the part of the international heroes to bring the criminals to justice through legal and not so legal means. It has lots of action , intrigue, sadness, and triumphant involved. It is chilling to realise how men and women can sink to such barbaric inhumane acts against humanity for the money and the cruel pleasures it brings them. A well-written book on this subject and some fine comeuppance being delivered to the perps in kind. I have purchased other books by this author, as I know they will impart knowledge of not so favorite subjects with clarity of facts and great fiction in the mix.
Deadly Crossing is the third book in the Tom Dugan series, but I sincerely hope it isn't the last! (It's also the third I have read by this author, and I feel this was the best.) This book is a well-written and -researched though fictional tale about the international sex-slave traffic. Although I am definitely put off by the language and explicitness of much of the book, I realized it reflects reality...and more than likely, the reality is much worse. I doubt if most of those girls' stories turn out as happily as did Cassie and Karina's. However, with all the tragedy and pain in the world, I do appreciate reading books with positive outcomes. One little pinch of disappointment, Mr. McDermott--I thought that at the ending you would circle back around to Tom's proposal of marriage to Anna...(spoiler) I was waiting for that and it never came! Does that mean there'll be another installment coming?
