Edmund Grant, a physicist in Chicago, builds an actual, functioning time machine. He travels back to 1924 Chicago determined to avoid any risky interaction, but fate draws him toward intervention in the infamous Leopold-Loeb kidnapping and murder case, with unexpected results. Then, in a trip to the near future, he discovers things about himself and his work that are hard to accept. His beloved device even bestows on him the power of temporary resurrection. Thinking at first this would be a cheesy ripoff of Stephen King's 11/22/63, I began reading with guarded skepticism. While not as "heady," this book is entertaining and thought-provoking, nonetheless. If you need a couple hours' escape, do read. If you're interested in the case of Bobby Franks, a "must-read." If you're a critical snob; don't bother, but I enjoyed it very much.Product details

The story flowed nicely but I have trouble identifying with a character that would not use his invention to gain either knowledge or wealth.... Surely he could have at least spent any easy profits on more lab equipment and better health care. I know personal profit is the most obvious direction for a time travel story but I think the author needed more compelling explanation why the protagonist could not or would not exploit his invention for personal gain.
I did appreciate that the author wrote about a time machine that had limitations and constraints but I had hoped that this would develop into more conflict and some twists,
I found this time travel story interesting, fairly well-crafted and organized. What I felt it needed more of was a human warmth, more contact with people and less solitary isolation. The major character had deep emotion, but for me it was a bit sterile. All considered, though, I thought the author did a good job.
